字源 FORM — what the parts do
The old graph carries two tellings. One reads it straight from its parts: 更 to renew over 生 life — renewed into living again, 死而復生. The other takes it as a clipped 蘇 (revive), 蘇 lending the sound sū with most of its strokes dropped. Either way the word is the same: the dead thing breathes once more — 甦醒、復甦.

The body lies still, then the chest lifts again — 生 (breath) renewed, 更 (anew).
