菐聲pú — a dense, rough growth; gives the sound
T菐 pú → 樸 pǔ — only the tone lifts
Wood (木) with 菐 (pú) for the sound — 說文 reads it 木皮, the bark, the tree still in its rough coat. Wood not yet worked is plain and honest, and from that came the everyday sense: 樸素, 質樸, 樸實 — unadorned, sincere.
