A person (人) under a roof (宀), packed round with straw (茻) against the ice (仌) below. Everything but the roof has fused into one block. The old graph carries two tellings: the whole scene as one picture — person, straw, roof, ice; or the same shelter with the inner 𡫱 lending the sound. From the bitter cold: 寒冷, 寒冬; and the cold-and-bare life, 寒士, 貧寒.
