Under a roofed shed (广), stalks of hemp (the 林-shaped 𣏟) hang to be stripped and dried — that work indoors is the word: hemp, flax (大麻、麻布). The fibre's prickling crawl gives the loan 麻木, numb; the same tangle gives 麻煩, a bother. As a sound 麻 then builds its own series: 磨、摩、魔.
