A horse (馬) plus 主 (zhǔ) for the sound — 說文 reads it 馬立, a horse halted and standing. To pull up and stay in one place: 駐足 (to pause one's steps), 駐守, 駐軍 (to be garrisoned), 進駐 (to move in and stay). 主 itself is the one who stays put — host, not guest.
