A robe (衣), its top and bottom pulled apart to wrap the middle. The old word is the lower hem of a garment — the trailing edge. From the edge of the cloth came the edge of a people: the far frontier (邊裔), and those at the far end of the bloodline, the descendants — 後裔、華裔.
