Grain (禾) with 少, which lends the sound — shǎo lifted to miǎo. 說文 reads it 禾芒, the fine whisker on the grain-tip, the slenderest thing on the plant. From that smallest sliver the word was lent to the smallest slice of time: 秒鐘, the second; 一秒, 秒針.
