IFshí → shuò — the sound shifted
A head (頁) and 石 shí — the original was a big head, and from there everything large and full: 碩大, 碩果. The eminent scholar took the word, and so did the master's degree: 碩士. 石 carries the sound, worn from shí to shuò.
