盜
盜 = 皿 + 㳄
ㄉㄠˋ · dào
verb/noun — to steal, rob; a thief
字源 FORM — what the parts do
皿義a vessel, the goods in a dish
㳄義drool — mouth (欠) with water, mouth watering
The old graph carries two tellings. One reads it as drool: 㳄 — a watering mouth — leaning over a vessel (皿) of food, wanting what isn't his. The other splits it 皿 + 次聲, 次 lending the sound cì, voiced to dào. Both land on the same crime: to take, by mouth or by hand, what belongs to another — 盜竊、強盜、盜賊.
故事 STORY — a scene to remember it by
一盤(皿)食物,旁邊一張嘴流著口水(㳄)盯著——要偷。
A dish (皿) of food, and a drooling mouth (㳄) fixed on it — about to take what isn't his.
