Water (氵) with 戾 lì, a dog squeezing out beneath a door. Water wrenched out of the eye, against your will — the tear (眼淚, 流淚). The reading slid from lì to lèi. The simplified form 泪 trades the sound for plain sense: water 氵 at the eye 目.
