A hand with a stick (攴) acts out a pattern set before it — to imitate, to bring about. The sound-part carries two tellings: 交 jiāo on the right, or the 爻 inside it — either way worn toward xiào. Copy the model and you get a result: 效法 to model on, 效果 the effect produced, 效勞 to devote one's effort.
