Threads tangle, and the heart (心) cannot pull free — to be in love. 䜌 luán sits on top, two skeins of silk (糸) twisted around speech (言), giving the sound and the very picture of a snarl. A heart caught in that snarl is 戀: 戀愛 falls in, 留戀 won't leave, 戀人 is the one you're tangled with.
