Tjǐ → jì — same sound, only the tone falls
A heart (心) with 己 jǐ for the sound, only the tone falling to jì. A heart turned in on the self burns with envy; the same fearful, guarded heart shrinks from what it dreads — to avoid, to hold taboo: 妒忌、忌諱、忌口. The same 己 builds 紀、記.
