亏聲yú — gives the soundbreath rising and catching, an old form of 于
A person thrown wide (大) — big talk, swollen words. 亏 (the old 于) carries the sound. To make a thing sound bigger than it is, to puff it up — and from there, to over-praise: 誇大、誇張. With 言 added it becomes the everyday 誇.
