土義earth — what the wall is rammed from
辟聲bì — gives the sounda body and a knife dividing off a space
Earth (土) below, 辟 above carrying the sound — a rampart of rammed earth. 辟 means to cut a space apart, and that is what a wall does: it splits the room from the world. The same 辟 builds 璧、避、劈.
