危
危 = 厃 + 卪
ㄨㄟ · wēi
noun/adj — danger; dangerous, precarious
字源 FORM — what the parts do
厃聲wēi — gives the sound, and draws the cliff-top figure toothe top piece — worn so it no longer reads as the cliff-top figure; carries both the picture and the reading wēi
卪義a second figure kneeling below, holding back
The old graph carries two tellings. In one, a single figure stands high on a cliff (厃), looking down from a fearful height — that alone is danger. In the other, 厃 wēi sits on top giving both the cliff edge and the sound, while below a kneeling figure (卪) checks the fall. Either way: high up and afraid. From the cliff edge, everything teetering: 危險、危機、危急.
故事 STORY — a scene to remember it by
上頭一人立在崖邊(厃),下頭一人蹲著(卪)拉住——一步都不敢動。
One stands at the cliff's edge (厃), one crouches below (卪) holding on — and neither dares move.
